Italian Wine Scholar - Puglia & Sardegna
Our Italian (IWS) evenings are in-depth tastings on all the key regions and lesser-known regions of Italy. The IWS study and certification program is geared for members of the wine trade and avid Italian wine enthusiasts. We are offering the opportunity to attend single evening sessions of our Italian Wine Scholar course - perfect for those who want to experience an evening of the course before committing to the full course or for anyone who wants to learn more about a specific region in Italy.
Puglia’s links to vine and wine has very ancient origins. Together with olive trees and olive oil they have always characterised the traditions of this region. For a long time Puglia was known as the ‘wine resevoir’ of Europe due to the presence of fertile plains and the production of large volumes of bulk wine but since the early 2000s it has made significant strides in terms of its wines’ quality and character. This is thanks to the producers who have come to understand the potential of the region and its native grapes such as the powerful and rich Negro Amaro and Primitivo to the more elegant and firmly tannic Neroi di Troia.
Sardegna (Sardinia) has a rich and diverse topography with a distinctly untamed landscape characterised by rocky mountains, hills, forests, largely uninhabited areas, rugged coastal cliffs and long sandy beaches. It’s one of the most pristine and unspoiled natural environments in all of Italy. Vines have been part of Sardinian culture since very ancient times and are cultivated everywhere on the island. They’re often marked by nuances of Mediterranean scrub couple with a salty-briny note that give these wines a strong sense of place.
On this evening, you will taste at least 8 wines that showcase the different varietals, wine-making styles and terroir of these wine regions.
Who should consider attending this evening? This evening is ideal for those:
- Considering, currently studying or have completed the WSET Level 3 and/or WSET Diploma
- Who hold an enthusiastic interest for the Italian wine industry.
