Italian Wine Scholar - Calabria & Sicily
Our Italian (IWS) evenings are in-depth tastings on all the key regions and lesser-known regions of Italy. The IWS study and certification program is geared for members of the wine trade and avid Italian wine enthusiasts. We are offering the opportunity to attend single evening sessions of our Italian Wine Scholar course - perfect for those who want to experience an evening of the course before committing to the full course or for anyone who wants to learn more about a specific region in Italy.
Calibria has remained on the fringes of the Italian wine scene for a long time despite having an ancient wine tradition. Whilst viticulture plays a secondary role compared to other crops such as citrus fruit there are a few passionate producers whose focus and perseverance have kept Calabria on the wine map of Italy working with native grapes such as Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco.
Sicily’s position in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea has made the island a nexus of cultural mixing and integration for millennia. This rich cultural heritage is matched by an amazingly diverse and complex gastronomy that reflects all the different contributions made by the different people who have settled there. It’s a very large wine region blessed with a varied range of terroirs, conditions are ideal to grow the vine and there is a wealth of native grape varieties.
On this evening, you will taste at least 8 wines that showcase the different varietals, wine-making styles and terroir of these wine regions.
Who should consider attending this evening? This evening is ideal for those:
- Considering, currently studying or have completed the WSET Level 3 and/or WSET Diploma
- Who hold an enthusiastic interest for the Italian wine industry.
