World of Wine: USA & South Africa

Join us for a Wonderful World of Wine tasting on the great North America & the diversifying South Africa.

“Brilliant evening” 5 stars 29/07/13 "This was my first visit to the West London Wine School and it won't be my last. A brilliant tutored evening of South African wines hosted by Jimmy Smith whose enthusiasm was infectious! No pretention but descriptive and informative" (Gerald F via Trip Advisor)

Part One – North America
California dominates the U.S with approximately 90% of the production, which is turn is dominated by the large multinationals such as Ernest & Julio Gallo. However, at the other end of the spectrum some of the world’s finest Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and especially Cabernet Sauvignon is found here. Indeed, Cabernet Sauvignon mainly from Napa for the past three decades has battled against Bordeaux in the Paris Tastings (Judgement of Paris), and won. Arguably the finest in world then… (and we have some wonderful stocks of premium Napa wines...)
Part Two – South Africa
For almost a century South Africa was dominated by one cooperative, KWV, producing large volumes of very average wine. With the end of Apartheid in 1990 came the end of KWV’s domination eventually leading to privatisation of the wine industry. This freedom has allowed diversity to flourish and South African wines are becoming very exciting especially with Bordeaux-style blends, Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. This is where we come in…
