French Wine Scholar - Jura, Savoie & South-West France Evening

French Wine Scholar - Jura, Savoie & South-West France Evening

Our French Wine Scholar (FWS) evenings are in-depth tastings on all the key regions and lesser-known regions of France. The FWS study and certification program is geared for members of the wine trade and avid French wine enthusiasts. We are offering the opportunity to attend single evening sessions of our French Wine Scholar course - perfect for those who want to experience an evening of the course before committing to the full course or for anyone who wants to learn more about a specific region in France.

Jura & Savoie

Jura as a whole region only boasts a little over 2000 hectares (the next nearest this is Alsace with 15,000 hectares) so is a drop in the French ocean of wine. This really is rural France, with the stunning backdrop of the Alps and beautiful scenery boasting a collection of serene lakes. This is the Franche-Comté, land of the Montbéliarde cow, the only cattle permitted for the production of delicious Comté cheese. On top of all of this we have a plentitude of unique and diverse wine produced, completely different to anything else in the whole world. We'll taste expressive oxidised styles as well as modern fresh examples. Savoie too is a small vinous region, south of Geneva and adored by ski-fanatics. Alpine fresh white wines rule the roost here from grape varieties such as Jacquere and Roussette.

South-West France

South West France really means all the wine regions in the south-western quarter of the country with the major exception of the most important one, Bordeaux, and the Cognac region to the immediate north of it, which enjoy separate status. This ragbag of a collection can be roughly divided into those which are effectively continuations of Bordeaux, its vine varieties and its wine styles upriver of the Bordeaux region itself, and those further south and east which have their own distinctive identity. All of them, however, are influenced by the Atlantic rather than the Mediterranean, and tend to have the same sort of build (light- to medium-bodied) as Bordeaux.

On this evening, you will taste 8-10 wines that showcase the different varietals, wine-making styles and terroir of this iconic wine region.

Who should consider attending this evening? This evening is ideal for those:

  • Considering, currently studying or have completed the WSET Level 3 and/or WSET Diploma
  • Who hold an enthusiastic interest for the French wine industry

Cheeses and meats representative of those served in the region will also be available to enjoy during the tasting.
