Jimmy's Best of Liguria (Italy)

Jimmy's Best of Liguria (Italy)

Recently wine school founder and Wine Scholar Guild Italian Wine Instructor of 2018, Jimmy Smith, visited Liguria on a buying and research trip to unearth some of the great wines of this little known wine region. This tasting will showcase the top picks of the trip.

Liguria is a crescent-shaped region in north-west Italy nestled just below Piemonte. Its stunning Mediterranean coastline is known as the Italian Riviera and is a popular location for tourists from across the world. The 5 colourful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, as well as stylish Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure, are on the eastern coast or Riviera di Levante.

Although its vineyards are sparse, Liguria has 8 DOC zones and the best known wine among the DOCs is Cinque Terre meaning “five lands”, relating to the fishing villages along the cliffs. Two wines are made, a dry white known as Cinque Terre and a sweet Schiaccetrà, both made from Bosco, Albarola and Vermentino grapes. Much of the terrain is remote, with some coastal vines even catching the spray from the sea.

The DOCs of Colli di Luni and Colline di Levanto are quality regions for Sangiovese based reds and some interesting whites from Vermentino. Much of Liguria’s commercial wine production takes place in the southwest of the region where Rossese di Dolceacqua was the first wine to be classified in 1972. The little known red Rossese grape has a ripe blackcurrant-like flavour and its wines are often compared to the soft reds of the Languedoc. Many consider it to be the best grape come from Liguria and it is seldom seen anywhere else.

Join in for a fascinating tasting from one of the most beautiful places in Italy. There will 8 wines on tasting, carefully hand-selected by chief taster Jimmy Smith
