Fine Wine - Burgundy Grand Cru

Fine Wine - Burgundy Grand Cru

Taste FOUR £200 bottles of Pinot Noir - these are VERY RARE wines, much rarer than the best of Bordeaux.

Join us for an excellent tasting of the finest examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the exceptional region of Burgundy. Scattered across the Cote d'Or and in Chablis we find a small number of the highest-quality vineyards classed as Grand Cru. There are around 33 in the Cote d'Or and 9 in Chablis and these represent the creme de la creme of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. If you want to experience why collectors and avid wine enthusiasts pay small fortunes for such wines then this is the tasting for you. Wonderful.

Grand Cru Wines on Tasting:

  • Pascal Bouchard, Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir, 2006 (£35)
  • Nicolas Potel Corton-Charlemagne, 2005 (£65)
  • Ponsot Clos de la Roche 1998 (£205) - CC 18.5
  • Maume Mazis-Chambertin 1999 (£205) - CC 17
  • Armand Rousseau Ruchottes-Chambertin 2000 (£205) - CC 18
  • Clos de Lambrays Grand Cru, 2005 (£210)

Clive Coates MW (Master of Wine) Notes:

On Nicolas Potel (1 Star out of 3) "the wines are well-coloured, full without being sturdy, rich and succulent, pure and elegant."

On Ponsot (2 Stars) "this is one of the most individual domaines in the whole of Burgundy... the results can be stunning." On the Clos de la Roche 1998 "Plums, med-full body with some tannin. Sweet on the palate - very fine (18.5/20)"

On Maume "what I like about Maume's wines is their rampant individuality - the Mazis is sexy and exotic, wanton and dangerous." On the Mazis-Chambertin 1999 "Quite spicy nose, even a touch of the rustic. Ripe, ample and succulent with no lack of finesse. Very good indeed. (17/20)"

On Rousseau (3 Stars - Best of Burgundy) "Rousseau's wines are rich in colour, pure in texture, never over-oaked, always concentrated, balanced, vigorous and very classy. This is superb winemaking, from one of the gentlemen of Burgundy." On the Ruchottes-Chambertin 2000 "Fresh, complex and classy. Rather better than his Charmes and Clos de la Roche. Long and succulent. (18/20)"

With two Chardonnays on offer and four Pinot Noirs at the highest level this is a rare opportunity to taste a small hand-selected range of the greatest expressions of these grape varieties. VERY RARE WINES - much rarer than the finest wines of Bordeaux.
