Jimmy's Amber Revolution (Orange Wine)
Somewhat a revolution of late is the move towards the very traditional white wines, produced with red winemaking techniques such as prolonged skin maceration in large clay pots called amphoras (called quevri in Georgia) and long periods of maturation in large neutral oak vats. The wines are deep yellow gold to amber in color with a certain level of oxidation and a strong phenolic (tannic) character. These wonderfully complex wines gain much greater complexities than a standard white wine as the majority of the flavour is found in the grape skins and is extracted through the long macerations. The resultant wines are often lauded as skin-contact, orange or amber wines depending on the producer and the market.
In conjunction with a splendid new book, 'Amber Revolution' by Simon J Woolf, which is released in November 2018, Jimmy Smith the wine school founder has created an evening to discover these utterly compelling wines. Simon has recorded a video especially to introduce the evening and there will be copies of his book available (see picture). Jimmy Smith will be presenting the wines, that he has hand-picked specially for this evening.
We will taste through the history of amber wine beginning with Georgia, travelling across to Slovenia and Friuli in Italy with some new world examples thrown in for good measure. This is really tasting that will challenge the way you view white wines, and hopefully open up many new doors for the future of your wine drinking.
